When we create a to-do list, our goals become official and we have something concrete to work towards. By keeping our targets purely in our heads, we risk forgetting about them and missing out on the sense of purpose and focus that we need. To-do lists help us create order, reduce stress, enable us to focus and make what can seem unmanageable at first appear perfectly achievable.

Pick the right medium for your list

If you are keen to create a to-do list to help you get things done, it’s time to select the right medium for your needs. Are you all about digital or do you love to write things down on paper? You could use specially formatted stationery, a bullet journal or one of the 1000s of apps to help you write a to-do list and stick to it? You can break up your to-do lists by urgency, grouping together things that you need to do today, this week, this month and over a longer period of time. This will make your obligations seem more manageable.

Don’t overwhelm yourself

Try to keep your list of priorities short – if the list of things you need to do right now seems too long, relegate a few tasks to the weekly list. Make sure you prioritise the most important task that just cannot wait. Even by achieving a few basic things like doing the laundry, you can put yourself in the right frame of mind for carrying out bigger tasks and start feeling more productive.

Small, manageable chunks

Consider breaking down big tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks so you’re not intimidated by them. By sticking to realistic goals, you can remain in the right frame of mind. Try to assign a realistic block of time to each goal and remember to tick off or cross out each goal once you have completed it. When to create your list

The best time to create a ‘to-do’ list is when you have a few moments to yourself and can think clearly, so don’t try to produce one when you are already stressed or halfway through a task.
